MTB disciplines — a quick guide
XC (Cross Country)
The fastest MTB discipline. Long courses with plenty of climbing — fitness and endurance matter. You need lightweight tyres with low rolling resistance for speed, but enough grip for the terrain.
XC Marathon
Long-distance off-road racing. Marathon events lasting 3–6 hours. Tyre durability, low rolling resistance and puncture protection are critical. Reliability above all.
Trail / All-Mountain
The most versatile riding style. Mixed terrain with both climbs and descents. The compromise between speed, grip and durability. Ideal for most MTB enthusiasts and full-day rides.
Enduro / Downhill
Adrenaline and technique. Focus on fast, technical descents over rocks, roots and jumps. Wide tyres with aggressive tread patterns for maximum grip and control on demanding terrain.
Pump Track / Freestyle
Dynamics and tricks. Purpose-built tracks with rollers and berms, plus jumps and freestyle features. Tyres need to be fast, stable and resistant to punctures on hard landings.
E-MTB
E-bikes off-road. Higher bike weight and speeds call for reinforced tyre construction. Dedicated E-LITE models handle the extra load and deliver safety at higher speeds.

How to pick the right MTB tyre size?
You'll find the tyre size on the sidewall of your tyre:
- 29 x 2.25 — wheel diameter 29", tyre width 2.25 inches
- 27.5 x 2.60 — diameter 27.5" (650B), wide tyre 2.60"
- 26 x 2.10 — classic 26" diameter, all-purpose width
General rules for picking width:
- 2.10" – 2.25" — XC racing, fast riding, lower weight
- 2.35" – 2.45" — Trail, versatile use, balanced grip
- 2.50" – 2.60" — Enduro, descents, maximum traction and stability
Make sure the chosen width is compatible with your rim and that you have enough clearance in your frame and fork.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about Rubena MTB tyres
What's the difference between XC, Trail and Enduro tyres?
XC tyres (Cross Country) are built for speed — low rolling resistance, lightweight construction and narrower (2.10–2.35"). Ideal for racing and fast training rides.
Trail tyres deliver versatility — balanced grip, reasonable weight and all-round use (2.25–2.45").
Enduro tyres provide maximum traction and stability for aggressive descents — wide (2.45–2.60"), aggressive tread and rugged construction.
Can I use Racing tyres for everyday trail riding?
Yes, but with caveats. Racing tyres (Scylla, Kratos, Monarch) deliver top performance, but their lighter construction and softer rubber compound means they wear faster in everyday use. They're ideal for racing and training rides where you need maximum performance. For everyday riding, more affordable models like Cheetah or Ocelot are a better choice — they last longer and are more durable.
Which tyre width should I pick for my riding style?
Tyre width significantly affects ride characteristics. Narrow tyres (2.10–2.25") are faster, lighter and better for climbing — ideal for XC. Mid-width (2.35–2.45") is the all-round compromise for trail — good grip and reasonable speed. Wide tyres (2.50–2.60") deliver maximum grip, stability and comfort on descents, but they weigh more. Always check that your rim and frame/fork support the chosen width.
What does TPI mean and why does it matter?
TPI (Threads Per Inch) measures the thread density in the tyre casing. Higher TPI (60+) means a finer, lighter, more supple tyre with better comfort and grip — typical for racing tyres. Lower TPI is more rugged, more puncture-resistant and cheaper — suited to training and recreational riding. Our Racing line uses TPI 60 for the optimal balance of performance and durability.
