What to do with an old tube or tyres?

Have you finally replaced a worn-out tyre or a punctured tube with a new one? But what now with the old material? Throwing it into mixed waste is definitely not the best option.

At Rubena Tyres, we believe that responsibility for the environment does not end with purchasing a quality product, but continues with how we handle materials at the end of their life cycle.

Why Don’t Old Tyres and Tubes Belong in Regular Waste?

Bicycle tyres and tubes are made of highly durable rubber compounds designed to withstand thousands of kilometers in demanding conditions. However, this durability also means that these materials decompose very slowly in nature, sometimes taking hundreds of years. That is why they certainly do not belong in mixed waste.

In addition, they contain valuable materials that can be reused. Our tyres include advanced rubber compounds, textile reinforcements, and often special protective layers that still hold value even after wear.

Where to Take Them? Recycling and Reuse Options

1. Specialized Collection Yards

Handing in tubes and tyres at a collection yard is definitely the best choice! Most collection yards in the Czech Republic accept old tyres, including bicycle tyres.

Check in your town or village for disposal options.

2. Bicycle Service Shops and Stores

Many bicycle service shops and retailers have their own systems for collecting old components. When buying a new tyre, ask if they can take the old one for recycling.

3. Creative Secondary Use

Old tubes have surprisingly wide uses:

Protective strips: Ideal for protecting the frame from scratches.

Rubber bands and straps: After cutting, they are great for fastening things.

Patching material: A source of material for repairing other tubes.

Workshop aid: Floor protection during repairs. Tubes can be woven into mats, rugs, etc.

Did you know that old tubes can be woven into a basket, and old tyres can be turned into a wallet, handbag, or belt?

4. Material Recycling

Rubber from bicycle tyres can be processed and used in the production of:

Sports surfaces

Children’s playgrounds

Insulation materials

Industrial rubber parts

Practical Tips for Maximum Lifespan

Do you want to get the most out of your Rubena tyres and extend their lifespan?

Correct pressure is key → use the recommended pressure according to the chart on the tyre sidewall. Too low pressure causes faster wear and increases the risk of punctures.

Tyre rotation → the rear tyre wears faster. When the tyre shows signs of wear, move it to the front and put a new one on the rear.

Proper storage → store tyres in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Every Step Counts

Responsible handling of old cycling components is part of the modern cycling lifestyle. When you buy a quality tyre or tube from us, you invest not only in your performance and safety, but thanks to our European manufacturing and sustainable approach also in the future of cycling.

Remember your old tyre or tube during your next visit to a bicycle service shop, collection yard, or while working on a creative project at home. Every small step helps create a cleaner future for the next generations of cycling enthusiasts.

Riding without limits also means responsibility without compromises.
