SAMUEL MUCHA: Young MTB XCO Phenomenon

Samuel Mucha is a 14-year-old rider who has quickly established himself on the MTB XCO scene. He has had a very successful season so far, including his participation in the European Championships where he took a great 7th place in the short track and contributed to winning the silver medal in the team relay.

Samuel's dominance was on full show at the recent HSF Bike Čeladná 2024 race, where he not only won his category in the 30km marathon, but was also first overall. "Winning the marathon was an amazing experience," says Samuel. His exceptional performance and determination show that we will be hearing a lot about him in the future.

Hi Sam, can you tell us how your journey to MTB started and what you enjoy most about this sport?

My parents got me into cycling, it's my dad's heart sport. At the age of two I stood on the start line of a bike race and won my very first race. Over time, I fell in love with the sport. What I enjoy most is riding with friends in the outdoors.

So you've never thought about another sport?

I've tried several sports like judo, floorball or basketball. But the closest I've come is cycling and swimming.

And what are your goals and ambitions in MTB?

My ambitions are high. I definitely want to achieve a medal position at the Czech Republic, European Championships or the Children and Youth Olympics. I will do everything to win.

That's what we like to hear! Do you have a role model that you look up to?

Well, definitely Nino Schurter, Mathieu van der Poel, Jarda Kulhavy... There are many. I'd definitely like to get close to these phenomena one day.

We believe in it. And how do you see your competition?

The competition within the Czech Republic is great, there are a lot of very good fighters. Anyway, even though we compete against each other on the track, outside the races we are friends, and that's the most.

That's how it should be. Can you tell us what your training regime looks like?

My training is "simpler" so far, I train twice a week. My coach and I are looking more into the future. There's no need to rush anything.

What about school? Can you combine it with sports?

I'm managing school so far without a problem. I'm very happy that they accommodate me, as I often need time off from classes for competitions or training camps.

What effect do the expectations of coaches or sponsors have on you and how do you work with this pressure if applicable?

I don't feel pressure from sponsors or coaches, but I am very grateful for all the support I have and try to present them in the best way possible.

You have finished the first half of the season, you are riding Rubena Tyres this year, how satisfied are you with them?

I first came into contact with Rubena Tyres at the final race of the Czech Cup 2023 in Harrachov. I got a pair to test and my dad "changed them" for the race. For the first time I rode on 2.25 tyres - I had been riding 2.1 tyres until then - I could tell the difference immediately. In addition, during the race a crazy thunderstorm started, the streams of water and mud on the track were unreal. And I was very surprised how the tyres held up. Then, when the opportunity of material support from Rubena came up, I was happy to be able to rely on them again, they ride great.

Last question - can you give us a tip on some nice cycling routes here in the Czech Republic?

I like Landek - mining museum in Ostrava. You can ride beautifully here. Plus, I can get here from my house by a beautiful bike path. And Beskydy, Krkonoše, Šumava are certainly beautiful. We have beautiful nature in the Czech Republic and it is even more beautiful from the saddle of a bike.

Sam, thank you for the interview and we wish you a lot of success and unforgettable experiences on the track. We are happy to be part of your journey.
