Janka Keseg Števková and Martina Krahulcová were together at the start of the legendary Cape Epic pairs race this year. The original team line-up changed at the last minute, but in the end the two cyclists found their way to each other and could rely on their trust and loyalty, which are crucial in this demanding race.
Cape Epic is not only a sport challenge for them, but also a logistical one. Every year they struggle with finances, and this year they were unable to find a team sponsor. In the end, we supported Janka with financial support to purchase the air tickets and tyres, which have already proven their worth in the challenging African terrain during several "Epics". The first stages I was riding on Rascals, when it started to rain, I switched to Scylla" - says Janka.
The goal of this year's race was to finish in the top ten, which they did! Janka and Martina finished in a great 9th place. Still, in the distance, they see that they could have done even better. On the positive side, they avoided injuries and technical problems, had a good race and gained valuable kilometres for the season.
Janka has seven completed Epics, Martina has four, and both hope to add more to their collection. The season continues and their next goal is the 4 Islands race in Croatia, where they finished a great third place last year.
Racing at this level is financially demanding, so Janka is trying to get funding for the next season. Her results help her cover some of the costs, but it is not enough to fully prepare.
Despite all the challenges, both Janka and Martina remain optimistic and motivated - their desire to race and fight for more great results is definitely not missing!
